What happened
Apple announced iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. The device has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple says the two screens share an aspect ratio so content scales proportionally when the phone opens or closes.
How it works
The software is doing more than resizing a conventional phone screen. Apple says iOS 27 on iPhone Duo supports Split View, two windows of the same app, and saved app pairs that can be reopened later. The hardware uses A20 Pro, a custom vapor chamber, and a dual-battery architecture. Apple also says Apple Pencil with USB-C will work on either display later in 2026.
Apple lists October 16 for preorders and October 23 for availability. Those dates describe the launch plan, not a guarantee that every region or configuration will arrive at the same time.
Apple presents the foldable as a hardware and software package: the hinge creates another screen state, and iOS 27 supplies the layout rules that make that state useful.
Why it matters
A foldable earns its hinge only when the operating system changes its interaction model with the hardware. Split views and paired windows give the larger interior display a job; the shared aspect ratio gives the transition between states a consistent visual rule.
What we don’t know yet
Durability, battery life, camera performance, and the real-world value of the multitasking model remain open. Apple Pencil support is a later feature, and the launch specifications and availability are Apple’s own claims until independent testing.
