What happened
Mastercard announced Agent Connect as a merchant-side integration for AI agents, commerce platforms, payment providers, and participating merchants. Mastercard says the service can expose merchant-defined product details, prices, availability, and fulfillment information instead of forcing every agent to infer them from a consumer-facing page.
How it works
Mastercard describes a sequence that starts with catalog discovery, moves through a cart recommendation, confirms price, tax, shipping, and fulfillment details, and ends with an authorized transaction. Mastercard says merchants choose where to participate and retain control over pricing, fulfillment, customer relationships, brand experiences, and business rules. The company also says Agent Connect can use secure payment credentials from Mastercard and other networks.
Agent Pay adds Verifiable Intent to the pitch. Mastercard says the framework helps connect a purchase to the consumer authorization behind it. In practical terms, the merchant side is being treated as an API with state and policy, not just a checkout page an agent clicks.
Why it matters
Agentic commerce needs interoperability on both sides of the transaction. A wallet may give an agent a credential, but the merchant still needs structured product data, a live cart, enforceable rules, evidence of authorization, and a controlled way to participate.
What we don’t know yet
Mastercard says rollout begins in the United States and will evolve with product availability. Adoption, security, interoperability, and partner participation remain company claims; the announcement is not evidence that merchants or agents have broadly adopted the system.
