An AI agent completes a UK bank payment

GoCardless says an AI agent completed a recurring Trussell donation through a conversational flow and a Direct Debit mandate.

What happened

GoCardless says it processed the UK’s first agentic account-to-account transaction as a recurring donation to Trussell. The donor could learn about the charity in a conversational AI flow, choose a monthly amount of five, ten, or fifteen pounds, and continue without leaving that interaction.

How it works

After the donor selected an amount, GoCardless says the agent asked for bank details and set up a Direct Debit mandate. The payment runs account to account, so the agent guides the conversation while an existing payment rail carries the durable recurring authorization. GoCardless says it built and launched the flow inside the Financial Conduct Authority’s AI Live Testing programme.

That separation matters. The model handles explanation and selection; the payment system handles the mandate and the underlying authority. The flow is therefore not an LLM inventing a new financial permission model in a chat box.

The donor still makes the consequential choice by selecting the amount and providing bank details. The agent is the conversational front end, while the mandate remains a recognizable payment object with its own rules.

Why it matters

Agentic payments become more credible when the agent orchestrates a rail that already understands consent, revocation, recurring authority, and transaction state. The useful boundary is simple: the agent guides the conversation, while the payment system carries the authorization.

What we don’t know yet

“First in the UK” is GoCardless’s claim about this specific flow, not an audited industry record. It is one charity experience inside a testing programme, not proof of general availability, fraud performance, autonomous authorization, or FCA endorsement.
